Laser engraving image preparation

Getting clean results from a laser engraver starts with a properly prepared image. Prep My Image converts your photos into laser-ready files with the right contrast, threshold and dithering for your material — wood, slate, leather, acrylic, glass, anodized metal or MDF. No Photoshop needed.

What is dithering and why does it matter?

Dithering converts grayscale tones into patterns of black and white dots that a laser can engrave. Algorithms like Floyd–Steinberg and Atkinson produce far better tonal gradients than simple threshold — especially on wood and leather where halftones make portraits look three-dimensional.

LightBurn file export

Export your processed image directly as a LightBurn project file (.lbrn2). It opens in LightBurn with your image already placed, sized, and assigned to a cut layer — ready to send to your laser machine.

Print-on-demand and Etsy sellers

Prepare images for t-shirts, stickers, mugs, posters and general print exports. Choose your print type and Prep My Image adjusts sharpness, contrast and output format to suit your POD platform requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Prep My Image free to use?

Yes. The basic export (up to 1500px, PNG / JPG / LightBurn download) is completely free with no account or sign-up required. High-resolution and batch processing are planned for a future tier.

Which dithering algorithm should I use for wood?

Floyd–Steinberg is the best starting point for wood — it produces smooth tonal gradients and fine dot patterns. Atkinson gives slightly higher contrast and works well for portraits. Try both and compare using the Before/After slider.

Can I use this with any laser engraver?

Yes. The PNG output works with any laser engraver software including LightBurn, LaserGRBL, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge. The .lbrn2 export opens directly in LightBurn.

Do you store my uploaded images?

No. Images are processed in memory and never saved to disk. Your original image is not retained after the session.

What image formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, PDF and Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files up to 30 MB. PDF and .ai files are converted from the first page automatically.

What are the material presets?

Each material preset loads starter settings for contrast, threshold, invert and sharpness tuned to that surface. They are a starting point — actual engraving results depend on your machine, power, speed and focus settings.
